Lacoste, France
During my 2025 winter quarter, I had the opportunity to join SCAD's Lacoste full-quarter study abroad program. I spent 8 weeks in Provence, France, studying photography and video.
Solitary
Solitary is a series of inside glimpses of a state of mind experienced during the winter in Provence, France.
During the winter in Provence, nature is dormant, wildlife is scarce, and the people are few. The sun hides behind dark clouds, as the ever-present fog engulfs the town. Defensive structures can make one feel trapped, suffocated, and lost in time. The dark, cold, narrow streets paved in stone can easily consume one in solitude.
Each subject is confined within the darkness that is slowly closing in on them. While the small ray of light is our mind fighting the urge to give in to the darkness.
Reflecting that we are alone in the darkness, where it can be difficult to find the way out. Over time, we can find ourselves and learn to overcome the darkness. Learning not to let our minds be consumed by it, we can find peace and mindfulness within dark solitude. ..
