Higanbana

The series, Higanbana, embodies the relationship between red and white Spider Lilies and the concept of passing on from one life into another through rebirth. Higanbana starts with the concept of death, the soul lost in the afterlife, until finding a white butterfly, guiding the soul to be reborn. 

Red Spider Lilies carry the meaning of death and a soul passing from one life to another. While white represents rebirth and purity. Throughout this series, there is a white butterfly guiding the departed soul from death into rebirth. In Japan, white butterflies represent the souls of the departed who act as messengers and guides. Spider Lilies are native to Japan, and their symbolism of death and rebirth is very important in Japanese culture. Called Higanbana, “flower of the afterlife,” named after the Buddhist festival of Higan, which honors one's ancestors, guiding their souls to rebirth.

The idea behind this project started with my personal connection with Spider Lilies and how these flowers have shaped my life. There was a time in my life when my mind and self had passed, and I was in a state of emptiness, wandering through life. Hoping to one day be reborn and find myself again. I know I am on the journey of being reborn. I just need to be patient, and it will come. This journey of passing on and rebirth is a continuous journey not only for Spider Lilies, but for yourself.
